Links to racism, white supremacism, misogyny, and a long list of scandals define Darren Beattie, the man chosen to handle relations between Donald Trump’s government and Brazil.
Beattie was appointed earlier this year to lead contacts between the two countries. However, he recently lied while attempting to obtain a visa to Brazil. His authorization was revoked after it was revealed that he planned to meet Jair Bolsonaro in prison—something he had not disclosed in his official mission plans.
During Trump’s first term, Beattie worked as a presidential speechwriter. In 2018, he was fired after reports revealed he had participated in a conference linked to white nationalists. At the time, he defended himself by claiming his remarks were purely academic.
In writings from that period, Beattie even referenced Brazil while analyzing ideological movements, describing the country as a possible model of a system dominated by economic elites.
After leaving government, he founded the media outlet Revolver News, which became known for spreading conspiracy theories. Among them was the claim that the January 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol was actually carried out by federal agents.
On social media, Beattie expressed support for the MAGA movement protesters, stating that the FBI should “kneel in respect.” He also attacked politicians, academics, and social movements.
Ongoing controversies
The controversies continued with statements widely seen as misogynistic and racist. In one post, he claimed that “competent white men must be in charge if you want things to work.”
He also targeted singer Taylor Swift after she criticized a monument honoring a figure associated with the Ku Klux Klan, using remarks considered offensive.
Beattie even praised Trump’s comments about poor countries, calling them the “high point” of his presidency.
Return to power
Despite the controversies, he returned to political influence and held positions within the Republican administration. With Trump’s return to power, he was appointed Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs.
He now has direct influence over the political agenda between Brazil and the United States. On his own website, Brazil’s government is described as a “regime,” and he is portrayed as playing a role in sanctions and trade measures against the country.
Articles on the site also make harsh comparisons, suggesting Brazil is moving toward authoritarianism.
The platform even credits Beattie for these actions, reinforcing his influence within international political strategy.
A central figure in bilateral relations
With a history marked by controversy, Darren Beattie has become a key — and highly polarizing — figure in the current relationship between Brazil and the United States.
