Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has accused sectors within the United States government of attempting to interfere in Mexico's internal affairs through media campaigns and disinformation efforts.

According to Sheinbaum, the objective may be to influence Mexico's 2027 elections, which will renew the country's Chamber of Deputies and several state governments.

Speaking during an event marking the second anniversary of her administration, the president emphasized that the fight against organized crime is a shared responsibility among nations.

"However, this fight cannot serve as an excuse to weaken fundamental principles of international law, such as non-intervention and respect for the self-determination of peoples," Sheinbaum stated.

Trump Administration and Cartel Policy

Earlier this year, U.S. President Donald Trump reportedly considered military action against Mexican drug cartels operating within Mexico. In March, Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that Washington could act independently in Latin American countries if necessary to combat criminal organizations.

Despite her criticism, Sheinbaum said she does not believe President Trump himself is responsible for the alleged interference efforts.

"We always talk. He tells me what he thinks, and I tell him what I think, and we always reach an understanding. Hopefully this is only a problem involving certain sectors," she said during a press conference.

CIA Incident Raises Concerns

Sheinbaum referred to an incident involving two CIA agents who died in a car accident in the Mexican state of Chihuahua. According to Mexican authorities, the agents did not have authorization to operate within the country.

"No foreign agent may perform duties that fall exclusively under the responsibility of Mexican authorities. Anyone who comes to our country must do so with full respect for our sovereignty and in accordance with our laws," she declared.

Extradition Requests Spark Diplomatic Tension

The Mexican president also criticized the U.S. Department of Justice for requesting the extradition of ten Mexican citizens allegedly linked to drug trafficking without presenting evidence.

Among those targeted were an elected governor, a mayor and a member of the Mexican Senate.

"An event of this magnitude is unprecedented in the history of our bilateral relationship," Sheinbaum said.

She questioned whether the requests genuinely seek to assist Mexico in combating crime or whether political interests in the United States are influencing the actions.

"Are we witnessing sectors of the American far right using our country to position themselves for the 2026 elections? Or are they attempting to influence our 2027 elections?" she asked.

Cooperation Without Subordination

Sheinbaum reiterated her government's commitment to fighting corruption and organized crime, noting that intentional homicides have fallen by 49% during the first 20 months of her administration.

At the same time, she argued that cooperation between nations must respect sovereignty and legal procedures.

"Cooperation does not mean subordination, and collaboration does not mean submission. Mexico's history has taught us that no nation preserves its freedom if it allows foreign interests to decide its destiny," she concluded.
